The reserve program at the Winston Police Department is operated by a full time police officer who has been designated Reserve Coordinator by the Chief of Police. Reserve Officers at Winston Police Department operate at three different levels; Basic, Intermediate, and Advanced.
Basic level reserve officers are allowed to take minor police reports and issue citations under the direct supervision of a full time officer. At the basic level, reserves are not permitted to drive patrol vehicles.
Intermediate level reserve officers will have completed a minimum of 100 hours of documented ride-along time. In addition to taking reports and issuing citations, Intermediate level reserves may work certain types of assignments alone. They will also begin driving patrol vehicles with the completion of proper training.
After completing the requirements of Intermediate Status, Reserve Officers may move up to advanced status. Advanced Reserve Officers will be able to work alone, in addition to working some paid assignments.
Advanced level reserve officers will also receive five points towards any hiring process for full time positions.
All reserve officers are required to work a minimum of 24 hours each month, or they may be dismissed from the program.
Reserves are required to furnish their own duty gear and uniforms. The department may provide reserves with uniforms if the department has additional uniforms available.
